IF THERE'S ZOMBIES, I'LL WATCH IT
East Asian Flicks
All About Me
Hi there and thank you for stumbling across my platform. My name is Amanda, and I am currently studying English and communications with a minor in psychology. Have you been introduced to East Asian media, be it animated or live-action television shows and movies, and wondered where you should start? I did too! I was first introduced to East Asian media through the well-known app Tik-Tok. I was scrolling through my freshly curated “For You Page” and for one reason or another the algorithm decided that I should watch a bunch of anime edits and inside jokes. At the time I was not into any East Asian media, though I had seen glimpses of “Naruto” as a child and struggled through “Death Note.” The first anime I ever watched as a sentient adult was “Haikyu,” a light-hearted but rather intense high school volleyball anime. Not expecting much, I binged the first three seasons in a week. From there on, I fell down a rabbit hole of East Asian movies and television shows. The more anime I watched on Netflix, the more it would recommend. Eventually, I was introduced to the genius that is South Korean action-thrillers. I watched one after the other, anything that Netflix would recommend to the point where I had a curated a “Made in Korea” section. Of course, this extended to other countries like Japan, China, India, and Taiwan. Finding a hidden gem on Netflix has kept me going and thrown me deeper into the genre.

IMDb
Though I still indulge in American movies and television shows, my interest really lies in mostly South Korean and Japanese media. It is fascinating the many ideas that come from these countries. They will take a simple premise, like the horror of someone who lives alone finding a sign that someone else what in their apartment and twists it into something you cannot look away from, like Kwon Lee’s “Door Lock.” “Door Lock” has reigned on my list of top three favorite movies since I have watched it. I wonder if another movie will ever surpass it, at the rate new releases come out it could be soon. One thing to know about me is that, if there are zombies, I will watch it. This is one of the main reasons Kim Eun-hee’s “Kingdom” will likely remain seated within my favorite television shows. If there is one thing South Korea is good at, it’s zombies. They find new ways to retell the overused trope, but it never gets old.
